Prague, April 15 - The five-star Fairmont Golden Prague hotel on Pařížská Street in the center of Prague, formerly the InterContinental, opened to its first visitors today after several years of renovation. Other parts of the hotel will be added gradually by the end of April, the operator, the international chain of luxury hotels Fairmont Hotels & Resorts from the French Accor group, told ČTK today. The hotel will offer 320 rooms, restaurants and bars, including the Zlatá Praha rooftop restaurant, as well as a spa and fitness center. It also includes a conference hall with a capacity of up to 600 people.

The hotel was purchased in January 2019 through the investment company R2G by billionaires Oldřich Šlemr, Pavel Baudiš and Eduard Kučera. According to information from the e15 server, the four-year renovation cost around four billion crowns. Fairmont Golden Prague is the first hotel of the Fairmont Hotels & Resorts chain in Central Europe.

The hotel combines original historical elements with modern design. According to the chain, glassmakers Jan Kukla and Zdeněk Lhotský, artist Jan Černohorský, designer Wanda Valihrachová, and sculptor Martin Janecký participated in the hotel's decoration. The reconstruction was led by the Czech architectural studio TaK Architects.

"Fairmont Golden Prague is once again becoming a symbol of top-notch service, respect for history and a deep connection with the local community. We will turn the moments spent at the hotel into unforgettable experiences. We are not opening a hotel for foreign guests, but a new place in the city where Praguers and visitors to the metropolis will be able to visit at any time," said the hotel's general manager Gerhard Struger.

The InterContinental Hotel was the first international five-star hotel in the former Czechoslovakia. It was built in the brutalist style between 1968 and 1974. Since its privatization in the 1990s, it has changed hands several times and has undergone a gradual reconstruction of its rooms, restaurants, lobby and wellness center. Over 50 years, the hotel has accommodated more than four million guests. Among the most famous were, for example, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, US President George Bush Sr., singer Michael Jackson and opera singer Luciano Pavarotti.

At the beginning of April, the Prague leadership approved a new version of the memorandum concerning the future appearance of Miloš Forman Square next to the hotel. Unlike the originally adopted version, the new one does not contain a specific proposal for the design of the square, including the construction of the criticized new building, but primarily includes support for an architectural and urban planning competition that the hotel owners plan to announce at the end of April.

The Fairmont Hotels & Resorts chain states that it operates about 90 hotels worldwide, including the famous Plaza in New York and the Savoy in London.
