Prague, April 1 - New exhibitions that will present the common cultural heritage in the Czech-Saxon border area will be created thanks to a joint project of museums in Česká Lípa and Bad Schandau, Germany. In Česká Lípa, the Renaissance summer palace Červený dům will open to the public, where a new branch of the Česká Lípa local history museum will be established. The spokesperson for the Liberec Region, Jan Mikulička, informed ČTK (Czech press agency) about this today.
The Červený zámeček or also Červený dům is a former Renaissance summer palace that Jiří Jetřich Berka of Dubá had built in the castle garden near the Lipý water castle in 1583 in the style of the North Italian Renaissance. It is a two-story building with an irregular ground plan decorated with sgraffito and an open loggia. From the outside, it is not clear why the house has the nickname red. It has been called that since the 19th century, when it acquired its current form, probably due to the red painting of the loggia.
The summer palace, which is one of the most important cultural monuments in Česká Lípa and its surroundings, is a unique example of Renaissance architecture in northern Bohemia. The chateau also served as a dyeing house in the past, housed rental apartments and, for several years, a museum. For now, people can only admire it from the outside, as it is not accessible to the public and is only opened on exceptional occasions.
Now, thanks to European funds, the summer palace, together with the adjacent building, will become a branch of the museum. The exhibition there will present the Berk family, who were its first owners and significantly influenced the development of the Česká Lípa region and the Bad Schandau area. It will also focus on printing and dyeing fabrics and will also focus on hunting and weapons. "We also want to present specialized, highly professional museum activities that save and preserve our tangible cultural heritage," added Zdeněk Vitáček, director of the Česká Lípa Museum and Gallery.
The Liberec Region can receive up to 40 million crowns for the project from the Interreg Czech Republic - Saxony cross-border program. This is not the first such cross-border project. "Five years ago, the Museum of the Bohemian Paradise in Turnov cooperated with the museum in Bad Schandau on a project called There are no borders for climbers. Thanks to it, two new exhibitions presenting the sport of climbing and lifestyle have opened," added Deputy Governor Květa Vinklátová (Mayors for the Liberec Region).
