Prague, March 31 - The municipal company Prague City Tourism (PCT) will start the tourist season on Tuesday, April 1. The Prague towers that it manages will be open for a longer period. This year's news includes the daily operation of the historic tram line 42 and the opening of the wallpaper room in the St. Nicholas City Bell Tower in Lesser Town. This will be open to the public for the very first time. This was announced by PCT spokesperson Klára Janderová and PCT Chairman of the Board František Cipro.
"We expect that this year the monuments managed by us will be visited by a similar number of visitors as in the previous year, when we welcomed more than 1.8 million domestic and foreign visitors to the Prague towers," said Cipro.
The Prague towers, which include, for example, the Powder Gate, both towers of Charles Bridge or the Petřín Lookout Tower, will have longer opening hours from Tuesday. These are not uniform for all towers. Interested parties can find precise information about opening hours on the PCT website.
This year, for the first time, the historic tram line 42 will be in operation every day with an interval of 40 minutes. The PID tariff does not apply, passengers must have special tickets valid for 24 hours. Passengers can get on and off at any stop during the validity of the ticket. The line departs from Dlabačov, travels a circular route through the center and ends again in Dlabačov. "It alternates between several types of old tram cars," added Cipro.
For the first time, visitors will be able to enter the wallpapered room in the Svatomikulas city bell tower. The room originally served as the apartment of the assistant bellman and was recently revitalized. "It's called wallpaper because there are newspapers on the walls, which in the 19th century served as insulation. Heritage experts claim that it's unique. This type of poor housing has not been preserved in a similar form anywhere else in Bohemia," said Cipro.
The St. Nicholas City Bell Tower is a late Baroque building. It is closely adjacent to the Church of St. Nicholas in Lesser Town. It dates back to 1755 and also served as a fire tower. It is the last bell tower in Prague. From the 1960s, it served as an observation post for the State Security (StB), the intelligence service of the then regime, during the communist totalitarian regime.
Prague City Tourism is a city company that is in charge of tourism in Prague. In addition to promoting Prague in the Czech Republic and abroad, it also manages some monuments, such as the Petřín Lookout Tower, the Powder Gate, and both towers of Charles Bridge. It operates the historic tram line 42 and organizes themed walks with guides.
