Mapy.cz service is switching to the Mapy.com domain, wants to be more accessible abroad

Updated: Aug 29

Prague, March 24 - The map application Mapy.cz from Seznam.cz is gradually switching to the global domain Mapy.com. It wants to be more accessible to users all over the world. According to company representatives, the expansion of the application abroad will also bring benefits to Czech users - the map data will have more extensive coverage and more accurate data. The application will also offer new functions and improvements. The largest Czech internet company reported this on its blog.

"The transition to Mapy.com is a step towards greater clarity for foreign users. However, we believe that it will also bring benefits to domestic users thanks to a greater amount of shared data, experience and experiences. All of this will help us continue to improve Mapy.com," said David Finger, director of the Email.cz and Mapy.com division at Seznam.cz.

Mapy.cz has been operating in the Czech Republic for 25 years, offering detailed maps and route planning, even in offline mode without an internet connection. Planning is available for cars, pedestrians, cyclists, cross-country skiers and boaters. "It was key for us to maintain a link to the original name while also allowing the brand to reach a global audience. The name Mapy.com represents an ideal compromise between preserving Czech roots and being understandable for international users," said Finger.

Mapy.cz will also offer users a wider range of traffic navigation. "Full navigation, including traffic data, is already available in Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Germany. Soon it will also be available in Slovenia, Hungary and Italy. Users will be able to get from Prague to the Alps or Lake Balaton, for example. In addition, drivers from these countries will be helped to obtain data on traffic, accidents, closures and can report police patrols," Finger noted.

According to him, offline map management will also see improvements. Soon, Mapy.com will offer a clearer selection of areas for foreign regions, the user will be able to select the desired area directly from the map. The new functions will also be available to users of the premium, i.e. paid version of the application.

Changing the domain to Mapy.com will not have any effect on the operation of the service. "This will be a minimal adjustment that an ordinary user may not even notice. The main thing is to make the application more understandable and accessible for foreign markets," Finger added.

Seznam.cz is owned by Ivo Lukačovič, who founded the company in 1996. The company operates the search engine of the same name Seznam.cz, the news server Seznam Zprávy, Seznam Television, and in addition to the Mapy.cz service, also Sbazar, Sreality, and others. It offers, among other things, the comparison site Zboží.cz, the advertising system Sklik, and the video portal Stream.cz.
