Washington, November 5 - The next mayor of New York will be Democrat Zohran Mamdani, who defeated Democratic former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent and was endorsed by Republican President Donald Trump. Reuters and AP reported this on the night of tonight. According to them, 34-year-old Mamdani will be the first Muslim mayor of the largest American city and, when he takes office on January 1, will also become the youngest mayor of New York in more than a century.
Meanwhile, according to the BBC, the New York Election Commission reported the highest voter turnout in more than five decades. "We have officially reached two million votes - the first time since 1969," it said on the X network at a time when voting was still possible.
Mamdani defeated 67-year-old Cuomo, who ran as an independent after his opponent also defeated him in the Democratic Party primary. Mamdani has now also defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa, who has already acknowledged Mamdani's victory, according to the BBC. "We have a mayor elected. Of course I wish him good luck, because if he does well, we do well," Sliwa told his supporters.
Mamdani is one of a handful of prominent American left-wing politicians who describe themselves as democratic socialists. In addition to becoming the first Muslim to lead New York City, he will also be the first American of Indian descent to serve as mayor of New York. Trump and other Republicans have repeatedly called Mamdani a communist, a claim the Democratic candidate denies.
The current Republican White House chief said this week that New Yorkers had no choice but to elect Cuomo as mayor. Trump has also sharply criticized Mamdani, saying that his election would spell doom for New York. At the same time, the US president said that he would very likely block federal funding for New York if Mamdani were to become the city's leader.
