Barcelona, May 10 - Due to a chemical leak, the Civil Protection in Catalonia advised residents of five municipalities between Barcelona and Tarragona this morning not to go outside and not to open their windows. According to AFP, the measure affected around 160,000 people. Around noon, the authorities lifted most of the measures. The leak occurred during a fire at an industrial plant in the city of Vilanova i la Geltrú.
The fire and the leak created a "chlorine cloud", which, according to EFE, has not yet caused any casualties. According to EFE, the authorities hope that the cloud will move over the sea over time.
However, this morning, the Civil Protection sent out a warning to residents of the municipalities around the plant affected by the fire, advising them not to go outside and ventilate. Around 12:00, it revised the recommendation. It recommended that only people with serious health problems, the elderly and children not go out.
According to firefighters, the fire broke out after 2:00 a.m. today at the Clim Waterpool plant, which manufactures pool cleaning products. Firefighters managed to get it under control so that it did not spread to other buildings. However, it is still not completely extinguished, and it could take several more hours, firefighters said.
