Rome, September 4 - Italian fashion designer and founder of the famous brand Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91. According to press agencies, his company, which he founded in 1975, announced this today. Armani was among the elite of his field for several decades, bringing a minimalist style to luxury men's fashion with his elegant and timeless creations.
The native of Piacenza near Milan presented his first collection in the Italian fashion capital in 1974 and a year later he founded his own brand there with his life partner, the late Serge Galleotti. It gradually gained global prestige and expanded into the fields of cosmetics, music, sports and luxury hotels.
Armani had planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his brand in a grand way at Milan Fashion Week in September. However, in June, he was forced to skip Milan's spring fashion week for the first time due to unspecified health problems, where he traditionally presented his men's collections for the upcoming season.
He died at his home, his company said, without giving further details. According to the AP, Armani's empire is estimated to be worth more than $10 billion.
